More Than One Benefit
The fact that tooth-colored fillings, also referred to as composite resin fillings, blend with your tooth and surrounding dentition is a major benefit, but it is not the only benefit. Other benefits include:
Heat and cold: Metal fillings can expand and contract in response to the heat and cold associated with foods and beverages. If they expand, they can crack your tooth which can lead to infection. Resin fillings do not expand or contract in relation to temperature. Therefore, they are safer for your teeth.
Protection: Because composite resin fillings conform to the shape of your cavity and are bonded to your cavity walls, they provide a more effective seal, largely reducing the chance that bacteria will re-enter the cavity.
No controversy: Because composite resin fillings do not contain mercury, there has been no question as to their safety.
Strength: Composite resin is a naturally tooth-colored material, but can be tinted to match your unique dentition. It is a plastic and glass mixture that has ample strength for front and back teeth.
