Years ago, you may have thought that cavities were impossible to prevent. However today, due to continuous dental research, we can pinpoint the exact bacteria that cause cavities. Not only that, but we have preventive measures that include home hygiene–brushing twice a day and flossing daily–and bi-annual checkups and cleanings. Of course, we can’t prevent all cavities for everyone, but there are ways to help prevent cavities from developing.

Dental Exams

From the very first visit to your dentist, dental exams will be performed to help keep tabs on your oral health. Your very first exam will consist of digital X-rays and advanced 3D imaging. This technology provides more detailed images for a more precise diagnosis. The initial exam will provide a baseline, and at future biannual appointments, an exam will also be done to see if any problems have begun to develop.

Dental exams are one way to determine if any problems are developing, but dental cleanings are what will help keep your teeth free of cavities. Professional cleanings clear away the dental plaque (which if you miss during brushing, will turn into tartar), and tartar. If tartar is not removed it can irritate your gums and cause gingivitis which, when left untreated, can develop into periodontitis, the severest stage of gum disease. Periodontitis leads to tooth loss and other more serious dental problems.

A proper home hygiene program along with bi-annual dental exams and professional cleanings can help you to prevent cavities from developing.
