If you are suffering from periodontal disease, you may need a scaling and root planing procedure. Scaling and root planing is a deeper cleaning than your average dental prophylaxis (professional dental cleaning). Scaling and root planing is a dental procedure that removes plaque and bacteria that have traveled below the gumline. This procedure is performed to prevent bone loss caused by chronic gum disease. Gum disease is the number one reason for tooth loss. Research has also indicated that gum disease can complicate (or perhaps lead to) certain medical conditions including high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, and dementia.

Symptoms of Gum Disease

Do you have the following symptoms of gum disease? If yes, make an appointment with your dentist right away.

Yes or No: Are your gums a deep red, and swollen, rather than firm and light pink?

Yes or No: Do your gums bleed when you brush?

Yes or No: Are your teeth sensitive to the heat and cold due to receding gums?

Yes or No: Are you experiencing separation between your teeth and gums known as periodontal pockets?

What To Do

If you are experiencing any of the above, your dentist will give you a thorough examination including X-rays. Your dentist will also use a probe to measure the depth of your periodontal pockets. The American Academy of Periodontology recommends that dentists perform deep cleanings when X-rays show bone loss, and a full-mouth exam reveals one or more gum pockets greater than 4 millimeters deep.
