Skipping dental appointments out of fear can lead to more serious problems down the road. When you fail to take care of your teeth properly you could very well develop periodontitis, the severest stage of periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is the major reason for tooth loss. It has also been associated with other chronic systemic illnesses including high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, and dementia. That’s why here at Just Wright Dental, we help fight your fear by providing dental sedation options.
Types of Dental Sedation
Don’t let your fear, worry, or anxiety keep you away from the dentist. Dental visits are important to your overall health. Here at Just Wright Dental we offer three types of dental sedation so you can experience pain-free and relaxing dental appointments.
Laughing Gas: We begin with Laughing Gas because it is the mildest form of dental sedation. It is also known as laughing gas, and it eliminates pain while providing a feeling of euphoria. It is administered by breathing it in through a small facemask, and wears off immediately after the mask is removed. Laughing Gas is even safe for children.
Oral Conscious Sedation: Oral sedation is stronger than Laughing Gas and taken as a pill or as a liquid, usually about an hour before your scheduled appointment. If you are extra anxious, however, your doctor may also prescribe a dose the night before. Because oral sedation is a stronger form of sedation, it will likely leave you groggy for the rest of the day.
Intravenous (IV) Sedation: As the strongest form of sedation, IV sedation is generally used for long, complex, surgical procedures. The patient enters a deeply relaxed state which often leads to sleep. A trained anesthesiologist is required to closely monitor the patient during an IV procedure.
